How you store your cannabis has a real impact on its freshness, aroma, and quality over time. Cannabis is a natural product, and like any natural product it degrades when exposed to the wrong conditions. The Four Enemies of Fresh Cannabis
There are four main enemies of fresh cannabis: light, heat, air, and moisture. Ultraviolet light breaks down cannabinoids and is the fastest way for flower to lose its character. Heat dries out buds and degrades THC over time. Too much air oxidizes the plant material and dulls the flavour, while the wrong humidity level leads to either brittle, dusty buds or, worse, mould.
Airtight, Cool, and Dark
The gold standard for storage is an airtight glass container kept in a cool, dark place. Mason jars are inexpensive, reusable, and seal well. A drawer, a cupboard, or any spot away from windows and heat sources works. Avoid clear containers left out on a shelf, and skip plastic baggies altogether — plastic generates static that pulls the delicate trichomes right off your buds.
Getting Humidity Right
Humidity is the detail most people overlook. The commonly recommended range for cannabis is between 58 and 62 percent relative humidity. Two-way humidity packs automatically add or absorb moisture to hold that range, keeping flower from drying out while preventing the damp conditions where mould thrives. Drop one in your jar and it will quietly do its job for weeks.
Storing Other Product Formats
Different products have different rules. Edibles and infused beverages should follow the storage and expiry guidance printed on the package, and some need refrigeration once opened. Oils and tinctures generally prefer a cool, dark cupboard, stored upright. Concentrates keep best in an airtight, non-stick container in a cool place, and vape cartridges should be stored upright to prevent leaking.
Safe and Secure Storage
One rule matters more than all the others: store every cannabis product securely, out of sight and out of reach of children, teens, and pets. A locked box, cabinet, or bag is the safest option, and always keep products in their original child-resistant packaging with the labels intact. Edibles in particular can be mistaken for regular food or candy, so never transfer them to unmarked containers.
Small Habits That Help
A few habits go a long way. Label your jars with the strain and the date, keep similar products together, and avoid warm spots like the top of the fridge. With a little care, quality flower can stay fresh for months — stored properly and stored safely.
